The 2022 Domaine André Bonhomme Viré-Clessé 'Les Pierres Blanches' is a 100% Chardonnay from the highest vineyard in the appellation, sitting at approximately 340–385 metres on steep, south-facing clay and limestone soils packed with small white stones — giving the cuvée its name. Fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel for 18 months on the fine lees, it is celebrated for a Puligny-like tension and intensity that punches well above its village-level price point, and the 2022 vintage is considered an A+ year for Burgundy.
Founded in 1956 by André Bonhomme and his wife Gisèle on just 4 hectares, the domaine has grown to around 14 hectares of organically farmed clay-limestone vineyards in Viré and Clessé, now run by the family's next generation — daughter Jacqueline, son-in-law Éric Palthey, and their sons Aurélien and Johan. André Bonhomme was one of the first Mâconnais growers to bottle his own wine and was a driving force in securing the Viré-Clessé AOC recognition in 1998.
100% Chardonnay
Fresh and fruity with notes of pineapple, honey, caramelised white peach, and apricot, underpinned by leesy spice and intense limestone minerality. On the palate it delivers a Puligny-like tension and precision, with ripe fruit, zesty acidity, and a long, refined finish.
Viré-Clessé is an AOC for white wine in the Mâconnais subregion of southern Burgundy, with Chardonnay as the only permitted grape variety. Created from the delineation of the two top Mâcon Villages — Viré and Clessé — it produces lively, full-bodied whites on clay-limestone soils and gained its own AOC status in 1999.
Typically retails between $28–$35 USD (approx. £22–£28 GBP / €15.50 at domaine); considered exceptional value for the quality level.
